What Is a Tummy Tuck? Let Dr. Devlin Explain
Tummy Tucks Are:
Common
Many patients feel like no one else is dealing with the same stresses or insecurities that they are. However, a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that 170,110 people chose to smooth their stomachs with abdominoplasty in 2023 alone.
Safe
Before planning your surgery, Dr. Devlin will make sure that you are a good candidate and that the procedure is safe for you. Though some patients aren't eligible for a full tummy tuck, they may be candidates for mini tummy tucks—a less invasive procedure with a smaller incision.
Customized
Dr. Devlin works with his patients to give them custom treatments that directly address their goals. For instance, he can reconnect abdominal muscles that often separate during pregnancy. He can also combine your tummy tuck with other procedures, like a breast lift or liposuction.

Understanding Tummy Tuck Candidacy
Tummy tucks are surgical procedures, and for the best results, you will need to be a suitable candidate. The typical tummy tuck patient has reached their goal weight or is within about 10 to 15 pounds of it.
They're also dedicated to maintaining their results with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Finally, they're in relatively good health, have a healthy BMI, and don't smoke or drink, among other factors that Dr. Devlin will assess during your visit.
Curious about the possibilities? There's only one way to find out for sure that you're a tummy tuck candidate: getting in touch with our Little Rock office for a consultation.

The Tummy Tuck Recovery Process
No two patients have exactly the same recovery, especially because there are so many custom surgical plans. Whether you have a mini tummy tuck, a traditional tummy tuck, or a tummy tuck with other procedures, our cosmetic surgeon will set clear expectations for your recovery. They include:
Wearing Compression Garments
A compression garment is crucial for the healing process. It helps ensure that your abdomen and muscles retain their shape as you recover.
Keeping the Area
Clean
Dr. Devlin will instruct you on how to keep your plastic surgery site clean and healthy. You will likely need a trusted friend or family member to help.
Resting as
Prescribed
After your plastic surgery, you will need to take some time to rest. Usually, patients need a week before they're back to work and about six weeks until they're fully recovered.

Making the Most of Your Tummy Tuck Your Role in Healing & Aftercare
Eat a Healthy Diet
Once fat cells are removed, the effects are permanent but this doesn't mean your body won't accumulate new fat deposits. Being mindful of your diet and eating healthy foods can keep your body from making new fat cells to accommodate your energy intake, preserving your slimmer figure. We recommend eating lean meats, fruits, vegetables, beans, and seeds. Try to cut back on snacking and avoid carbs and alcohol.
Exercise Regularly
Exercising will go a long way toward keeping your midsection–and the rest of your body–toned and free of excess fat. We recommend walking in the weeks after your cosmetic surgery as a way to keep active and minimize the risk of developing blood clots. Once cleared by your doctor, you could benefit from cardio exercises and strength training. Many patients opt for jogging, hiking, yoga, swimming, lifting weights, and cycling.
Don't Use Nicotine Products
Nicotine prevents healing tissues from getting the blood supply they need, impeding the recovery process. We recommend not using nicotine products in the months leading up to and following your cosmetic surgery. Ideally, patients should try to quit the habit altogether.
Fade Your Scars
Dr. Devlin will always try to place incisions in areas that can be easily hidden with clothing, but you may wish to do more to make them less noticeable. Scar creams can help fade scars from your abdominoplasty and any liposuction you've received. We also recommend protecting them from the sun as UV rays can make scarring more noticeable.
Tummy Tuck FAQ
Is the recovery after a tummy tuck painful?
We will always tell our Little Rock, Conway, and Hot Springs patients exactly what to expect as they recover. Pain is a normal side effect of any surgery, but can be managed with medication. You may also experience swelling, bruising, numbness, itchiness, and a tight sensation in the treatment area. These side effects will subside in the days and weeks following your body contouring procedure.
How long will my tummy tuck scar be?
The length of your scar will depend on the extent of your tummy tuck, but Dr. Devlin will try to make it as short as possible without compromising the results of your tummy tuck. While a traditional tummy tuck will require a longer scar, a mini tummy tuck scar will be significantly shorter. If you've had a C-section in the past, Dr. Devlin may be able to place your incision along this scar. Either way, the scar should easily be concealed below your underwear line.
Can I have a tummy tuck before getting pregnant?
We recommend scheduling an abdominoplasty once your family is complete as pregnancy will change how your abdomen looks. If you receive a tummy tuck and later decide that you want to grow your family, you will still be able to get pregnant and have a healthy child.
Can a tummy tuck remove all my extra stomach fat?
No, tummy tucks are designed to remove a limited amount of fat, ranging from three to four pounds. Typically, patients are advised to lose most of their excess weight before the procedure. In certain cases, your tummy tuck may also be able to be paired with liposuction.
Will my abdominoplasty results be permanent?
Yes, the results of your abdominoplasty will last a lifetime as long as you don't gain weight or get pregnant. When your fat or skin is removed from an area, they're gone permanently. Of course, you should still stay active and eat healthy for the best long-term results and well-being.
Will people be able to tell I've had a tummy tuck?
People close to you may notice your slimmer figure, but strangers likely won't be able to tell. Scarring is minimal and fades over time. Additionally, Dr. Devlin pays extra attention to the most common sign patients have had abdominoplasty: their belly buttons. His techniques create subtle and beautiful results.
"I had an inch of separation in my abs due to pregnancy, and was super nervous about the intensity/scope of the procedure (abdominoplasty). Now, a year later, the results of my surgery went beyond my (and my hubby's) expectations! Scarring is minimal, and my stomach is flat and natural. Dr. Devlin actually talked me out of additional work (liposuction), which really solidifies that he cares more about the patients than paychecks.” Autumn Stone
