What is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a plastic surgery procedure that improves the upper and lower eyelids. The upper eyelid surgery is aimed at correcting the sagging skin that overhangs the upper lid. The surgery for the eyelids removes mostly skin and a small amount of fat from the inner corner of the eye.
Where are the incisions made for eyelid surgery?
The incision for the upper blepharoplasty is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This incision heals well. The lower blepharoplasty incision is made just under the eyelashes or inside the lower lid.
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
If you are physically healthy, a non smoker, realistic in your expectations, and seeking an improvement to under-eye bags or drooping upper skin of the eyelids, you may be a good candidate.
At what age can eyelid surgery be performed?
Fat and loose skin around the eyes can appear at any age. Some young people are genetically prone to it, so there really is no average or set age when an eye lift is performed.
What should I expect after eyelid surgery?
After your surgery, your eyes will be tender, swollen, and sore, and you will have some bruising. These should all resolve in a few days. Discomfort is usually well controlled with pain medications. Your eyes may be watery or very dry. You will use eyes drops during the day. At night you will use a gel that may make your vision blurry so it is only recommended before bed.
When will my stitches be taken out?
Stitches are normally removed five days after your surgery. The removal process may sting a little, but is not too uncomfortable. Depending on how you are healing, you may or may not have steri-strips in place.
Can eyelid surgery be performed at the same time as other cosmetic surgery procedures?
Absolutely. Eyelid lifts are commonly done at the same time as facelifts and brow lifts. Combining these procedures is a good idea because you will only have one recovery.
What type of anesthesia is used for an eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery will put you in a “twilight” sleep. Your recovery will be faster when not using a general anesthesia and you will be just as comfortable.
How much time should I plan to take off from work after my eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?
Normal activities, including work, can typically be resumed within a week.
What risks is associated with eyelid surgery?
As with all types of surgery, there are some risks associated with eyelid surgery and these may include bleeding, difficulty in completely closing the eyes, dry eyes, infection, pulling down of the lower lids, slight asymmetry in healing or scarring, and white heads(milia). I will discuss the risks with you before your surgery.
Do men have cosmetic eyelid surgery?
More men are undergoing cosmetic Blepharoplasty than ever before. The need to maintain a more youthful appearance, in the workforce, has led to this increase. Quite simply, there is no stigma for men like there use to be and I see more and more men in my practice each year who want a younger looking appearance just like women do.
