Male Cosmetic Surgery in Arkansas Rises in Popularity
A recently published NBC News article shows that nearly twice as many men are choosing to have cosmetic surgery as did fifteen years ago. One of the potential reasons is the increasing attitude of acceptance of such procedures in today’s society. In the last few years, male cosmetic procedures have become more popular, thanks to media attention and the increased visibility of male celebrities speaking out about their procedures.
Plastic surgery is no longer considered to be “just for women”.
“Men tend to be a little more cautious”, says Little Rock, Arkansas cosmetic surgeon Dr. Michael Devlin,”to make them feel more comfortable, I usually see female patients with a female nurse with me. With the males, I see them by myself so it's just a male to male conversation so I think they feel more comfortable with that."
According to Dr. Devlin, "I think now it's becoming more acceptable and men are looking more into plastic surgery and I think this trend is going to go from 10 to 15 to 20 percent and I think these percentages are going to go up even more."Some of the most common plastic surgeries performed on men are: liposuction, facelifts and male breast reductions.
The reason men to choose plastic surgery vary just as much as it does for women. Some men may be trying to compete in a younger workforce. They may be recently divorced and want a younger looking appearance for the new dating scene. Maybe a healthier lifestyle has lead to massive weight loss that resulted in sagging skin. Or possibly they have had area on their body that has always bothered them, such as their nose or male breasts. Because the popularity of plastic surgery in the media, more and more men see this as a viable option for them.
“In my own practice, I see double the amount of men requesting facelifts than I did when I first started in 2001. Men have stronger facial features than women. If a surgeon uses the same techniques on men as they do on women, it can easily make men look more feminine, which is not what we want to do” Dr. Devlin said. For this reason it is important to ask your surgeon how much experience he or she has in treating men. Experience does matter when you are choosing a plastic surgery procedure.
Liposuction is another surgery that sits at the top of the list of most requested procedures among female patients. Recently, men have been discovering the procedure and the benefits it offers for them as well. Men most often choose liposuction for the same reasons as women, which may include: to look younger, to improve their fitness efforts, to look fitter by targeting fat and to take control of their body shape. Liposuction is a versatile procedure that can be used to correct many specific body concerns. For men, these may include love handles, male breast correction, and abdominal sculpting, among others. Dr. Devlin says he typically sees an increase in procedures in men in the early spring, not surprising, so that they can be healed and ready for the summer months.
