Male Cosmetic Surgery
You may have heard of the “mommy makeover” phenomenon—where new moms get several cosmetic procedures—typically a breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and/or breast lift—to help return their bodies to their pre-pregnancy shape. It has become one of our most popular procedures at Devlin Cosmetic Surgery. But in today's fast-paced environment, let's not forget about men's option to help improve his appearance too.
While women make up the majority of plastic surgery patients, men see the benefits as well. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons(ASPS), men received a total of 1,568, 714 different cosmetic procedures in 2014. The popularity of men and cosmetic surgery is seeing an upward trend.
The top three most common plastic surgery procedures performed on men in 2014 were:
Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery, also called Blepharoplasty and it can do a lot for a man who feels energetic and fit on the inside, but who looks tired on the outside. As we age, the skin around our eyes wrinkles and sags, and puffy bags underneath the eyes begin to become more evident. Blepharoplasty can refresh and rejuvenate the area around the eyes.
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)
Male Breast Reduction, also called Gynecomastia, is overdeveloped male breast tissue, caused either by hormones certain medications. For men who feel self-conscious about their chest, male breast reduction can help them eliminate embarrassing excess breast and fatty tissue and reveal the masculine definition underneath.
Male Facelift
A facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure which can help turn back the hands of time and make a patient look more youthful and attractive. A facelift can provide a dramatic improvement in facial appearance, yet maintain a natural look. Dr. Devlin feels that the best facelift is one which makes a patient look like a younger and better version of themselves.
The most common non surgical procedure for men is Botox/Dysport. The same ASPS statistics reported that 6,673,608 men received Botox in 2014. This can only mean that men are just as concerned as women with the signs of facial aging.
“There are larger numbers of men coming in for consultations than 10 years ago and I am performing an increasingly higher number of surgeries on them. More and more men are beginning to realize the benefits of cosmetic surgery and it is no longer considered just for women”. Dr. Devlin said.
Today, men of all ages and all walks of life are requesting cosmetic surgery for cosmetic reasons. This is likely due to increased awareness and social acceptance of having such procedures performed. While some of these men are retired and wealthy, most are not. The large majority of men we see at Devlin Cosmetic Surgery are in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. They are businessmen, who are typically career oriented and feel the pressure of the workplace to stay young and competitive.
At Devlin Cosmetic Surgery, we are happy to treat our male patients with the same level of professionalism as our female patients while uniquely tailoring their different needs to fit their goals.
