What is skin resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure able to treat damaged skin with the use of a laser or chemical . The procedure can treat sun-damaged skin, fine lines, facial scars, uneven pigmentation, and acne scars.

What do chemical peels do?
A Chemical peel resurfaces the skin by removing superficial layers of the skin. As a result, chemical peels promote the growth of a new healthy top skin layer and improve skin problems like hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture and skin impurities. There are different depths of chemical peels that can be used based on what results you would like to achieve.

How long is the recovery after a chemical peel and what type of care is necessary?
Recovery times will vary based on the type and strength of the peel. Immediately after the peel, your skin will feel tight and may be red. You may begin to peel after 48 hours. Peeling usually lasts 3-5 days, depending on the actual peel treatment. Use of gentle cleanse and moisturizer should be used. We recommend CU3 cream which can be purchased at our office. Sun exposure should be avoided while skin is peeling; exposure of treated skin to a lot of heat should also be avoided as it may induce swelling, redness and for deeper peels blisters under the skin. Peeling skin should be allowed to slough off naturally; picking or peeling of flaking skin is prohibited, as it may lead to scarring. Use of prescription topicals should be avoided as well. Sunscreen with an SPF of at 30 should be used after your peel.

What are the counterindications to chemical peels?
Chemical peels should be avoided if any of the following conditions are present:
• Active cold sores, herpes simplex or warts in the area to be treated
• Wounded, sunburned or excessively sensitive skin
• Accutane use
• History of recent chemotherapy or radiation therapy
• Women who are pregnant or actively breastfeeding
• Patients with Vitiligo
• Patients with a history of autoimmune disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis etc) or any condition that may weaken their immune system

Who is a good candidate for skin resurfacing?
The best candidate for laser resurfacing is a physically healthy man or woman who is realistic in their expectations and looking to improve the skin’s appearance. The procedure requires more caution for those with olive, brown or black skin as pigmentation changes can occur.

Is there much pain with laser resurfacing or chemical peel?
The application of the chemical or the process of the laser may cause some discomfort during the procedure. Therefore you will require light oral sedation to make you more comfortable and will need someone to bring you to the appointment and drive you home. The healing process does not produce much in the way for discomfort. Your skin will feel much like you have had a sunburn.

When can I go back to work?
You will have new surface skin in 7 to 10 days. You will not feel bad after the skin resurfacing but it will be apparent that you have had something done for the first 5-6 days. After your skin peels it may be slightly red. This redness can be covered by make-up. Your new skin will be very sensitive to ultra-violet light and you must avoid sun exposure until fully healed. When you do plan to go out in the sun, it is important to wear sunscreen.

Q: How long does it last?
A: With good skin care (sunscreens, skin-care products, moderation in sun-exposure, etc.) improvement will last for years. Remember: the clock starts again after your procedure – do your best to preserve your improvement!
