But when performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon, breast augmentation can enhance a patient's entire figure and boost their self-esteem. Exploring Candidacy
If you are in good health, don't smoke, and are not breastfeeding or pregnant, breast augmentation can allow you to enhance:
- Small breasts
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Enlongated breasts
- Flattened breasts
Breast augmentation is also commonly included in mommy makeovers, which are custom plastic surgery plans that combine procedures to rejuvenate your figure after childbirth. If your breasts are sagging, but you also wish to enhance their size and shape, Dr. Devlin may recommend combining a breast lift with breast augmentation.
During your plastic surgery consultation at our Little Rock, AR, office, Dr. Devlin will perform a careful assessment to determine if this procedure is right for you.
Saline vs. Silicone Gel Comparing Breast Implants
Both saline and silicone gel implants are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, and have distinct advantages that can make them a better fit for some cases than others. Let's have a look at the primary differences between these two options:
Saline Implants
- Filled with a saline solution
- Perform well under an ample amount of existing
breast tissue - FDA-approved for patients 18 and over
- Requires only small incisions because the breast implant can be filled after placement
- Revision surgery in the event of rupture is simple because the solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body
Silicone Implants
- Filled with a silicone gel
- Perform well for women with a small amount of natural breast tissue
- FDA-approved for patients 22 and over
- Requires larger incisions because the breast implant must be filled prior to placement
- Revision surgery in the event of rupture is more difficult due to the viscous gel

3 Types of Placement Techniques
Dr. Devlin can use one of three methods of placing the implant within the breast:
Inframammary
The inframammary technique involves creating an incision in the lower crease where the breast meets the chest. Dr. Devlin will make the smallest incision possible in order to insert the implant either above or below the pectoral muscle. This technique minimizes the risk of losing nipple sensation.
Periareolar
With the periareolar approach, Dr. Devlin will create an incision around the bottom half of the areola for either submuscular or subglandular placement. One distinct advantage of this approach is that the resulting scar blends into the tissue of the nipple, making it virtually unnoticeable once healed.
TUBA
Dr. Devlin is one of the few breast implant surgeons in the country who perform transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA). This involves creating a tiny incision in the belly button; next, Dr. Devlin inserts the implant above or below the pectoral muscle by guiding it through the incision and under the abdominal skin.
Breast Augmentation Recovery and Aftercare
Dr. Michael Devlin uses the Rapid Recovery Technique for his breast augmentation patients. This technique uses gentle anesthesia, minimizes trauma to the surgical site, and follows a post-operative protocol that gets you moving quickly. The result is less discomfort, a shorter downtime, and an easier recovery.
The Rapid Recovery Technique results in less discomfort, a shorter downtime, and minimized risk of complications.

Understanding Capsular Contracture
Scar tissue forms around foreign objects in the body, and saline and silicone implants are no different. After your cosmetic surgery, scar tissue will form around your implants and hold them in place. However, some patients experience capsular contracture, a condition in which the scar tissue constricts and becomes uncomfortable. If you're experiencing pain or your breasts look distorted, you may have capsular contracture. Reach out to Dr. Devlin so we can help you take care of it quickly.
FAQ About Breast Augmentation
Will I lose sensation in my nipples?
Nipple sensation is mostly supplied by the fourth intercostal nerve that runs from the side of the chest to the nipple. This nerve can become irritated during surgery. It is very rare to entirely lose nipple sensation. More commonly, patients become hypersensitive for a few weeks after surgery.
When can I resume exercising after breast augmentation?
We ask that you avoid upper body activities for approximately two weeks. If your implants are placed below the muscle, you may find that when you resume weights, you will not be able to begin where you left off. Once you do resume your workouts, it is important to wear a good sports bra.
Where is the best place for incisions for breast implants?
If there is any possibility that you will need a breast lift in the future, Dr. Michael Devlin will always recommend placing the incision in the inframammary crease. This is the crease underneath your breast. This will preserve a major blood supply to the nipple. He may recommend the inframammary incision if you have small nipples. Otherwise, the areolar approach (around the nipple) is an excellent choice for those who do not or may not need a breast lift.
How much swelling can I expect with breast augmentation?
There is considerable swelling after the surgery, and your implants will most likely sit high on the chest. Over the next few weeks, this swelling will slowly fade and the implants will settle into their proper positions.
How soon after breast implant surgery can I tan?
Dr. Michael Devlin will ask that you avoid sun exposure (this includes tanning beds) to the incision site for 6-12 months. When the incisions are exposed to sunlight, they can become "hyperpigmented," meaning the scars can become darker or more red. If you do decide to tan, we recommend covering your incisions with bandages to help prevent this from occurring.
How do I know which bra size to purchase?
Your band size will not change after breast implant surgery. However, your cup size will. If your incision is placed in the inframammary crease, Dr. Devlin recommends that you do not wear an underwire bra for the first six weeks. During your consultation, Dr. Devlin will measure you and have you try on our bras. Please remember that different brands of bras will fit differently. It is also important to try the bra on before you purchase it. Try not to get too focused on a bra size. It is more important to find an implant that you like in your clothing and then purchase a bra that fits your new breast size.
Can I breastfeed after receiving implants?
Most likely, yes. One thing to note, however, is that if your procedure involved periareolar incisions, the milk ducts and nerves that are stimulated by nursing could have been severed, preventing you from breastfeeding. You truly won't know if your ability to breastfeed has been affected until you try. If you have implants, let your baby's doctor know so they can keep an eye on your baby's weight and make sure they're getting enough milk. Keep in mind many women choose to wait for breast surgery until they've finished having children.
Dr. Devlin uses the Rapid Recovery Technique, which can allow Little Rock, Hot Springs, and Conway patients to return to work just a few days after breast augmentation surgery.
